Public Transit Poetry

On the Floor of the Blue Line

I saw an overripe strawberry

under a seat on the El,

among all the rush-hour feet.

Still free from the plush

white mold which devours

its brothers and sisters

who dwell in leftover refrigerators,

it waited, patiently, to be crushed

and swept away.
